Philip, the son of Joseph Humfrey and Martha Lowsley, was born in 1830. Parish records of Upton at the Berkshire Records Office show that he was baptised on 31 June 1830 and died on 23 May 1872. He married Rhoda and they had four children: William, Alice, Annie and Constance.

Comment by John Fall1:

We first knew of the existence of Philip through an inscription in a volume of the "Swiss Family Robinson" that he gave to his sister Grace2 on April 12, 1852. This volume was sent out to Grace's son Harry3 in Perth Western Australia in 1903. He, in turn, gave it to his daughter Maude4 in August 1911. After Maude died in 1926 it was passed to his youngest daughter Dorothy5 for Christmas, 1928. It was acquired by Dorothy's son John1 in 1988 following her death.

COMMENT:

Beryl Osborn [who married Ross Rumble (16010AM)] is a descendant of Anne Frances Evelyn. In 1993 Beryl reported that there was a weakness in the spelling and naming of people in her family records. Anne Frances Evelyn (so named on her birth certificate) was shown in other family records as "Vera Vivian Francis". A son of Robert Ernest Oaklands was named as "Earnest" not "Ernest". This may be a spelling error in the family record.

Bertie, as Herbert Montague was known in the family, was the sixth child of Henry Euean Rumble & Grace Humfrey. His birth is recorded in the parish of Eastbourne, England, for the quarter: January - March 1868, reference 2b 62. It is thus likely that he was born either late 1867 or early 1868. He trained as a mechanical engineer, and married Mary Knight, while his brother Harry1 married Mary's sister, Kate. Bertie's marriage is recorded in the Brentford Parish for the September 1891 quarter, 3a 213.

Bertie and Mary had five children: Lottie, Lettie, Mary Dorothy, Montague, and Cyril. In 1897 Henry St.John Knight2 wrote in a letter to his sister Kate Rumble3 that Bertie came from Birmingham to attend his mother Grace's funeral on 19th January 1894. In 1897 Bertie worked at Buenos Aires while his wife Mary stayed with daughters Lottie4 and Lettie5 at the family home, 2 Vanbrugh Terrace, Blackheath, London. Kate Rumble entered the birth day and month of each of the five children into a birthday book, which she gave to her daughter Dorothy6 when she was twelve years old.
